Call for Nominations: Divison & Interest Group Officers

The Academy’s Divisions and Interest Groups (DIGs) are now seeking nominations for a variety of elected volunteer roles, including STR division. Your help is needed in this important effort to identify future leaders for the Academy!

Nominating is simple: please visit and follow the onscreen instructions to log-in to your Academy profile. Once you log-in, you may select ‘Nominate Now’ for each of the DIGs in which you hold current membership.

If you know a colleague with great leadership skills who you would recommend, please submit his or her name today. Or, if you are you interested in serving your DIG personally, self-nominations are accepted and encouraged!

Volunteer roles and needs differ from division to division, so please examine each DIG’s list of available roles carefully and read the position descriptions provided to help guide your selection of nominees. In addition, each DIG’s respective Nominations Committee may send follow-up communications and special instructions relevant to their specific needs.

Most DIGs will continue to accept nominees until February 28, so please submit your nominations before that deadline. On behalf of all Divisions and Interest Groups, thank you for your participation in this important process!

Thank you,

We need your help – Sign up to review for STR at AOM 2018

Calling all STR (formerly BPS) members!

We have 500 reviewers but need 1200!!!

STR is the second largest division at Academy and we get thousands of submissions. Last year we had 1200 reviewers participate in shaping our program. As of now, we only have 500 people signed up to review. Note that even if you cannot attend Academy, you can review.  Also, if you reviewed in the past for BPS (thank you!) you still need to sign up again for 2018. We use keywords to match papers to your interests, and assign 2 to 3 papers to each reviewer. The review period will be from January 17 to February 15, 2018. Best reviewers are recognized at the annual conference

Please take a moment now to sign up and commit to being a reviewer and making our 2018 STR program fabulous! Signing up to review is quick and easy:

Please go to and “Sign In”; and then be sure to choose STR as your Division!

Thank you in advance for your generous service and I look forward to seeing you in Chicago!

STR new domain statement

Dear STR Community,

I am delighted to report that the new Strategic Management (STR) Division domain statement has been approved.  95% of voters were in favor of the revised statement. Thank you for your participation in the voting. We believe the new domain statement more accurately captures the breadth of the interests and activities of our division members.

This year we also officially changed the name of the division from Business Policy and Strategy (BPS) to Strategic Management (STR). Although we are all a little sad to see our beloved BPS disappear, the great majority of our members believed that a change was needed and that the Strategic Management name better describes what our division represents.

I’m excited about our new name and domain statement, and I am proud to be involved in important changes that have the overwhelming support of our division members.

Please also keep checking out our new division website where we will keep you updated on division news and activities!

Best regards,

Mary Benner

AOM Specialized Conference: “Big Data and Managing in a Digital Economy”

Dear division members,

We are glad to bring to your attention the AOM Specialized Conference Initiative: a multi-year experiment that aims to develop a portfolio of smaller, meaningful and sustainable new meeting opportunities that complement our large Annual Meeting. Several new conference models that will allow members to connect and engage throughout the year, virtually and in varied locations that are reflective of the geographic dispersion of our international membership, are envisioned as part of this initiative. In addition to these models, new ideas that reflect the creative energy of our membership are expected to emerge. The plan for realizing this vision for AOM conference activity is designed to continuously evolve as we experiment with new program structures, delivery modes, content features, and conference designs.

The next Specialized Conference will be dedicated to “Big Data and Managing in a Digital Economy” – hosted at the University of Surrey, UK on April 18-20, 2018 (submission deadline October 3, 2017). The Conference is in collaboration with the STR Division (among others.)

For more information visit our page AOM Meetings or the Conference website.

We look forward to meeting you in Surrey!

BPS becomes STR!

Dear division members,

We are happy and excited to announce that on Monday August 7th our Division Chair Brian Silverman has officially announced the change of our Division name from Business Policy and Strategy (BPS) to Strategic Management (STR). This decision was supported by a division-wide survey where the great majority of our members chose the new name over two other options (“Strategy” or just the original name). Although we were all attached to the original Division name and to a certain extent we are sad to see it “retire”, we believe Strategic Management better embraces what our Division represents today and  in the future. Most importantly, we are proud to foster a decision that was collectively supported by the great majority of our community members.

Name % of first-ranked votes Overall ranking
Strategic Management 52% 2.38
Strategy 27% 1.92
Business Policy and Strategy 22% 1.72

As you probably noticed, the division has also adopted a new logo that represents a modern reinterpretation of the original one, and thus offers a graphical bridge between past and future. The STR Division official colors remain  burgundy, grey and black/white.

Please remind that from now on, official AOM communications and conference-related texts will report the new division name and acronym instead of the original one.

On behalf of our Division officers and Executive members we are therefore happy to welcome you to the Strategic Management – STR Division: (still) “the Best Place for Strategy!”
